Micro Foundations of Democratic Governance

What do we mean by micro foundations of democratic governance?

These are the capacities that individuals bring to a democracy for the system to work and the regulatory processes that are most likely to elicit them. Expressing defiance, sharing values, having trust and hope, managing shame and pride, and reintegrating those who are marginalized are among the capacities that determine how well a democracy functions. Shaping these capacities are regulatory processes used by authorities to bring out the best in us - or the worst. We argue that better outcomes are achieved when authorities use responsive regulation. This website brings together research from a range of projects conducted under the auspices of the Regulatory Institutions Network.
